Exterior Electrical Safety Tips to Remember

Posted on

When you are using lights and other electrical appliances outdoors, it is important that you keep electrical safety in mind at all times. Follow these simple exterior electrical safety tips to prevent serious electrical and fire hazards.

Have an Electrician Install Exterior Outlets

If you want to plug in lights, extension cords, or electrical appliances outdoors, make sure you know how much capacity the outlets can handle. If you aren't sure, contact an electrician, such as A.J.C. Electrical Service Pty Ltd, to have the outlets tested first. You may need to get new outlets and electrical wiring installed if you will have a lot of appliances or lights plugged in outdoors, such as if you are going to have an outdoor kitchen area. This requires help from a professional in order to avoid electrical hazards.

Inspect Power Cords

When you are plugging something in outside, make sure you inspect the cords thoroughly. If you are using an extension cord, only use one intended for exterior use. You should not be using an indoor extension cord for outdoor purposes. Also check that any lights plugged in outside are appropriate for outdoor use, as the cords need to have a plastic covering to protect them from water, wind, and other outdoor elements. Make sure all cords being used outdoors are not frayed or otherwise damaged, or it could be a major electrical hazard for you and your family.

Be Careful Around Your Swimming Pool

Many people don't think about their swimming pool when considering outdoor electrical hazards, but this is actually one of the most severe. It is important that you get your swimming pool and hot tub inspected regularly for potential electrical hazards, especially if you have lights in or around your pool. Make sure that if you are using electrical appliances outdoors or have extension cords connected to your home's power supply, you keep them far away from your backyard pool.

Keep Trees Trimmed

If you have tall trees, make sure you are aware of where the branches and limbs are in relation to power lines. If they get too close to power lines, it becomes a fire and electrical hazard. When the trees start growing a little too close to power lines, call a tree trimming company to have those limbs and branches cut down. You may need to cut the entire tree down and plant another one in another area of your yard due to continuous dangers with the power lines.
