DIY Electrical Work: Avoid These Common Mistakes

Posted on

While many electrical repairs should be done by an electrician, some minor repairs can be done by yourself if you are extra careful and make sure you have the right tools. However, there are some common mistakes people tend to make. Avoid the following electrical work mistakes to protect your home and yourself from injury or damage.

Incorrectly Installing New Outlets

While installing a new outlet or light switch is something you might be able to do on your own, you need to be careful with it. Make sure you pay close attention to the details and ensure the outlet plate fits tightly against the wall. A common problem with installing new outlets is installing them too loose, so they don't fit tightly against the wall. This is not only an issue with the outlet plate itself, but the outlet behind the plate might be loose from the terminals. This can cause wires to become loose and create an electrical hazard.

Not Using the Right Wires

You also need to pay close attention to the size of the wires being used. This is done by looking at the gauge of the wire, which tells you how thick that wire is. The wire gauge is important as it varies based on what type of electrical repair you are working on. If you use a gauge that is too thin for the type of appliance being plugged into it, that outlet could easily get overheated and lead to an electrical short. You may need to consult an electrician when determining the right wires to use.

Not Using the Electrical Boxes Correctly

When you are working on your home's electrical system, many of the repairs and installations will have to do with the electrical panel. It is important that you understand how to use it correctly, from chooses the right wires, to knowing where connections should be located. You should never attempt an electrical connection outside of the electrical box itself. The box is meant to protect the wires from corrosion or other types of damage. If you have a fuse box, also make sure you are using the right fuses according to the electrical source.

If you are not completely sure about your ability to complete electrical repairs without incident, have them done by an experienced electrician instead. It might cost a little more, but it is well worth it when you avoid electrical hazard.
