Auto Electrical System: Tips for Optimal Battery Performance

Posted on

The battery is a critical component in the auto electrical system, and its failure will result in interruption of other automotive functions. Basically, the battery is solely responsible for providing electrical power to the starter when the engine is being turned on. In simple terms, all the vehicle elements including the fuel and ignition systems will rely on the battery for energy before the engine starts. Therefore, you should ensure that this electrical module is operating at ideal levels at all times. Here are simple tips to help to help in promoting optimal auto battery performance.

Avoid Discharge

The battery can easily become discharged when it is used continuously without recharging. This will result in the inability to start the car, so it is important to maintain good practices to avoid this problem. Generally, the alternator is responsible for charging the battery when the engine is running. Therefore, if you do not drive frequently or only take short journeys, the battery will be in danger of drainage. You should also avoid switching on accessories like the AC and radio when the engine is not running.

Unfortunately, the battery is still likely to get discharged and go flat at some point. This can happen due to the aforementioned problems, battery normal degradation or damage from external forces. You should prepare for such an occurrence to avoid the inconvenience attached to inability to start the vehicle. Ideally, you should purchase a self-powering auto battery jumper for your vehicle. However, regular jumper cables are also suitable if you can access a power source.

Clean the Terminals

The battery terminals can be covered with corrosion which builds as a salty crust. This material interrupts the flow of power since the crust acts as an insulation layer. Consequently, the performance of your entire automotive will be compromised. You should clean these components regularly to remove the corrosion material. Ideally, a professional should be engaged for this maintenance service. However, you can clean at home using a mixture of water and baking soda. This basic paste will neutralise the acidic material and then you can wipe the surface, leaving the terminal free of the crust.

Refilling the Battery

The regular battery should never be dried out, so you should refill it as needed. This task should be performed when the plates in the battery are not submerged in the fluid. You should always refill the battery with water, distilled or demineralised. The sulphuric acid content usually remains constant during the service life of the component.
